Japanese Scholarships

Please don’t be limited to these scholarships when studying abroad. If allowed, you could combine scholarships!

I tried to target undergraduate and community college specific studying abroad scholarships/ Japanese Scholarships, but most of these scholarships are open for undergraduate students!

* though Gilman Scholarship is available, I encourage students to apply to many more! They don’t even have to be specifically meant to study abroad! 

1 – 4 years duration

There are 4 different types of full-ride scholarships offered yearly:

  •  Research Student Scholarship
  • Undergraduate Student Scholarship
  • Specialized Training College Student Scholarship
  • Japanese Studies Scholarship

Deadline varies by state so make sure to check the site!

8-to 10-weeks duration

A full-ride immersive program, sponsered by the U.S. Department of State, that occurs during the summer and offers about 15 languages to study.

  • Need at least 2 academic years of the targeted language

Application opens in Fall and closes in November

Time Varies

Offering two types of scholarships: Boren Scholarships & Boren Fellowship

Boren Scholarship is offered to undergraduate students who are enrolled at an accreditted school pursuing an associate or bachelor degree.

  • Must have a minimum of 8 weeks

Boren Fellowship is meant for graduate students with a research and language study proposals.

  • A minimum of 12 weeks

A full-ride scholarship to a study abroad program of choice to undergraduate/graduate students who demonstrate financial needs and is in a good academic standing.

  • (Preferred) Applicants who have been raised by a single parent or who have lost both parents
  • (Preferred) Applicants without significant international travel or study experience
  • (Preferred) First in family to attend/graduate from college (i.e. first-generation)
  • (Priority) The priority for the scholarship is undergraduates who are studying abroad for a year or less

The Asia Institute offers various scholarships to study abroad, including: (at the time)

Scholarships are open for undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students.
Only 1-2 applicants are selected! You can apply to all scholarship, but let them know in the application!

The general scholarship is the California Community College Scholarships. School must be under the CCIE list. Any semester is accepted. Internship/Study Abroad Program cannot be virtual!

For all scholarships, 3 essays must be submitted and submitted by the student and faculty advisor, which is a study abroad officer or a professor.

The Diversity Abroad Overseas Ambassador Scholarship is a $500 scholarship for five recipients during the Spring/Fall and two during the Summer.

Additionally for the Summer, Diversity Abroad offers a scholarship with $500/$1000 winners. Requirements, unlike the first scholarship:

  • 2.75 GPA
  • Minimum of 4 weeks
  • $1,000 – Program Abroad / $500 – Domestic Program
  • Full-Time Community College / University students

At this moment, the Diversity Abroad Overseas Ambassador Scholarship is not being offered due to COVID-19. However, the Diversity Abroad Consortium Summer Scholarship is opening their application in Feb. 1st.

The Tortuga Backpacks Scholarship is a $1,000 scholarship (plus a gnarly backpack) that is offered yearly.

Eligibility:

  • Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or currently studying in the US on a student visa
  • Be a full-time undergraduate student in good academic standing at a four-year, degree-granting college or university in the U.S.
  • Have applied to or been accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit by your college or university
Scott's Cheap Flights Logo

The Scott’s Cheap Flights Studying Abroad Scholarship is a $1,000 essay scholarship that is offered yearly and per semester. Undergraduate and Graduate students are welcome to apply!

Fall Scholarships open October 16 & Spring Scholarships open March 31, but please look into the site if any changes.

Eligibility:

  • Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or currently studying in the US on a student visa
  • Be a full-time undergraduate student in good academic standing at a four-year, degree-granting college or university in the U.S.
  • Have applied to or been accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit by your college or university
